OST Copyrights the Aviation Safety Thesaurus

Washington, D.C., July, 2010 – OST is pleased to announce the registration of its copyright of the Aviation Safety Thesaurus. OST’s Aviation Safety Thesaurus (AST) is the first publicly available electronic thesaurus designed to support analysis of large databases of aviation safety incident and accident reports.

Aviation safety analysts who search incident and accident reports are often hampered by the extreme variability of language in the reports. Aviation jargon, non-standard abbreviations, and aviation-specific acronyms in the texts make keyword search and analysis difficult. To address this problem, OST built the AST, which provides synonyms for thousands of technical aviation terms.

AST is a platform-independent add-on that can be integrated with text mining, data mining, search and retrieval, and text analysis applications to facilitate the mining of aviation safety reports. The thesaurus automatically provides domain knowledge to these applications when used to mine aviation safety incident reports. This saves aviation analysts time that would otherwise be spent constructing countless variations of search expressions. Analysts can then use their expertise to focus on determining trends and predictors of aviation accidents.

Designed by OST as part of the FAA Safety Analytics project (2005-2007), the AST conforms to NISO standards for thesauri. To build the AST, OST’s team of computational linguists and aviation experts selected over 4000 aviation safety terms and over 8000 relationships among terms. The OST team integrated and demonstrated the AST with several text analysis and mining applications. The AST has been used for text mining by the FAA, Southwest Airlines, Delta Airlines, and the National Transportation Safety Board.

OST’s copyright of the AST makes the AST eligible for inclusion in the Library of Congress, the research arm of the U.S. Congress and the largest library in the world. According to Vijay Narula, OST’s CEO, “Our goal is the prevention of aviation accidents through improved analysis. The AST is a vital tool for aviation analysts mining large databases to uncover trends and predictors of aviation accidents.”

OST CEO Participates in DHS EAGLE II Panel Presentation

Washington, D.C. May, 2010 – Vijay Narula, CEO of Optimal Solutions and Technologies (OST, Inc.), was an invited panelist on a recent Department of Homeland Security (DHS) information session on Enterprise Acquisition Gateway for Leading Edge Solutions II (EAGLE II).  The EAGLE II session was convened by U.S. Representative Bennie G. Thompson on May 6, 2010.

EAGLE II is a successor to the 2006 EAGLE contract, under which numerous companies, including OST, were awarded contracts.  The initial EAGLE contract has served as a department-wide platform for acquiring IT service solutions, as well as management consulting. It has provided jobs and revenues to the private sector and has been instrumental in enhancing the overall security of the nation. According to a May 10 Washington Post article, DHS has awarded over $8 billion in initial EAGLE contracts to 53 large and small businesses, with over 400 task orders.

The upcoming EAGLE II contract is expected to be much larger and attract strong industry interest.  DHS has been hosting EAGLE II informational sessions to encourage the participation of large and small businesses. On March 29, more than 1,700 people attended the EAGLE II Pre-Solicitation Conferences for Small Business and Unrestricted.  In the May 6 session, the Washington Post cited Narula as estimating that up to 1,200 bids could be submitted on the EAGLE II contract.

DHS is asking for comment on the draft EAGLE II solicitation, which will be released by the end of May.

April

OST Volunteers Develop Living Classroom for Local School

Washington, D.C. April, 2010. Optimal Solutions and Technologies (OST) employees were among 7,090 Servathon 2010 volunteers performing public service in schools, parks, and homeless shelters throughout the greater DC area. Servathon is a yearly day of service sponsored by Greater DC Cares, an organization which works to positively impact communities in the greater DC area.

Working with other Servathon volunteers at Kimball Elementary School, OST employees donated their labor to develop the school’s outdoor “living” classroom. The living classroom enables students to study environmental issues, including the effects of storm water run-off on the environment and local wildlife. As part of the Servathon 2010 initiative, OST employees also raised funds for Greater DC Cares. For more information on this region-wide activity, please see Greater DC Cares.

OST’s participation in Servathon is part of its commitment to the greater Washington, D.C. community. Other OST community initiatives include support of veterans returning to the U.S., holiday giving to families in need, a food drive for homeless shelters, and donation of supplies to local schools.

February

OST Employees Participate in Operation Jump Start to Benefit Returning Soldiers

Washington, D.C., February 2010 – To support soldiers in their transition to the civilian life, OST employees collected new and nearly new professional style clothing suitable for veterans returning to the workforce. OST’s drive to collect clothing, gift certificates, and money donations was part of the sixth annual Operation Jump Start VI fund-raising event to help the soldiers of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom transition to civilian careers.

Sponsored by several government and industry organizations, Operation Jump Start VI supports soldiers recovering from serious injury and assists them and their families as they work to build new lives.  Operation Jump Start also helps soldiers returning to new careers in civilian life, and has established an internship program to assist them in getting started in alternative careers.

OST learned of Operation Jump Start through sponsoring organizations of which OST is a member.  “When we heard of this effort,” said OST’s Ron Rhodes, “we wanted to give wounded soldiers a hand.  When service men and women know that the community cares, it gives them a big lift.”  OST employees collected and delivered clothes and gift cards for soldiers. OST also donated money to support the ongoing work of Operation Jump Start.

Held at the Army-Navy Club in Arlington, Virginia, the fund-raising event featured live Big Band and Dixie Land music and tasty food. One huge room was filled with racks and hanger boxes filled with donated suits, dresses, and other professional style clothing, labeled by size for men and women. There were also tables for donations of money and gift cards.

Rhodes says OST plans to continue its involvement with Operation Jump Start in 2011.  “Next year we’ll again give OST people the opportunity to participate in this worthy cause. It’s great to be able to help soldiers who have given so much for us.”

Operation Jump Start continues to accept donations of money or gift cards. 100% of the donations are used to support recovering and transitioning soldiers.

January

OST Employees Reach out in Spirit of Giving
Washington, D.C., January 2010 – As the 2009 winter holiday season approached, one OST project team wanted to go beyond the usual giving and receiving of gifts among family, friends, and coworkers. They wanted to share the holiday spirit with others less fortunate. When OST’s employees contacted the Maryland Department of Social Services (DSS), they learned about the DSS holiday sharing program, and about a large, needy family.

The project team reached out to other OST employees, who generously contributed time, effort, and gifts. They bought age-appropriate new clothes, games, and toys for the children and a gift certificate for the parent. Just before the holidays, the OST team delivered the gifts to the family, presenting each family member with a large, colorful bag of gifts. OST’s project team hopes to expand their efforts to share the spirit of giving with two needy families during the Thanksgiving and holiday season of 2010.
