Intelligent Airspace Awareness

Challenge

With the rise in drone usage, especially small and fast drones that are hard to detect and assess due to their size, speed, maneuverability, and varied payloads (e.g., surveillance tools, packages, or even weapons), there is growing concern over their illegal or unsafe operation. A major challenge lies in determining the intent and danger of an approaching object and distinguishing threats from harmless entities. An OST customer asked us to take drone intelligence to the next level by giving systems the ability not only to detect drones but to classify them by type and payload, enabling more informed, timely, and effective responses.

Solution

OST’s solution combined multiple detection methods including radar, radio frequency (RF), acoustic sensors, and Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO-IR) cameras supported by advanced AI computer vision algorithms.

We’re expanding our EO-IR drone image dataset using both real and simulated data and increasing the depth of our classification labels to include drone types and payload categories.

But detection alone isn’t enough—we’re building a complete solution from camera to user. Whether deployed at the edge (via on-site micro PCs or laptops) or in the cloud, our model adapts to meet mission requirements. Multiple sensors and edge devices can be integrated to provide robust, 360-degree security for critical environments.

Outcome

Our solution simplifies the decision-making for security forces and first responders and provides timely and accurate information and helps responders select the best courses of action (CoA) for mitigation. The system can be tailored to mission needs, such as more focus on highly likely drone types, other flying objects/systems in the area of concern, flora, humans, ground vehicles, etc.
