OST PRESENTS ON SMART CITIES AT SMART CITIES WEEK

Washington DC, October 2019 – On October 2, Dr. Indu Singh, Senior Scientist, will represent OST at the Smart Cities Week, presenting on the topic The Smart State: Collaboration and Innovation in the Commonwealth of Virginia (www.smartcitiesweek.com). Dr. Singh will join other leaders from state and local government, academia and industry in Virginia to discuss advanced economic development and P3 opportunities that are driving the Smart City movement throughout the state. Virginia has moved from planning to implementation over the past year, and will talk about the impact of three specific projects: 1) a Statewide Data Governance effort leading towards a unified data governance policy, 2) Smart building/Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to improve public safety,  and 3) the centerpiece of the current Virginia effort: the new Smart Town Center in Stafford County (halfway between Washington, DC and Richmond. VA).

Sponsored by the Smart Cities Council, Smart Cities Week provides a global platform to promote innovations in metropolitan infrastructure. The conference brings together leaders from government, academia, and industry to discuss critical challenges in both unclassified and classified settings, and to develop a coherent, coordinated approach to these challenges.

According to Dr. Singh, the right to privacy is considered a universal human right, yet emerging technologies can threaten that right. The recent spate of ransomware attacks on Atlanta, Baltimore, and San Francisco have rendered municipal services inoperable for long durations, disrupting the 911 emergency dispatch system and public parking/public transit/utility payment systems. To plan and design a resilient Smart City, critical digital infrastructures must be resilient and secure.

Dr. Singh is a recognized author and expert on Smart Cities, having worked on notable projects in Singapore, Dubai and Amsterdam, to name a few. He is currently leading OST’s Smart City project for Stafford County in Virginia to develop a vision, strategy and implementation roadmap for the Smart Town Center project.
