McLean, VA, February 2020: OST, Inc. (OST) is the prime systems integrator and manager of the new Smart City Testbed, a Public-Private Partnership (P3) involving state and county governments, plus multiple industry and university partners, focusing on the economic and social benefits of digital transformation. Located in Stafford County with a secondary site in Arlington County, the testbed is a “live laboratory” testing emerging technologies in real-world situations to help create Smart communities throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Smart City Testbed is an extension of the Vision, Strategy and Operations plan developed by OST and the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) for the Stafford Smart Town Center project. Partners include Verizon, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Old Dominion University, George Mason University, and others.
Dr. Indu Singh (published author and recognized expert on Smart cities) is overseeing the effort for OST. The Smart City Testbed and related pilot projects in Stafford and Arlington County will provide insights into new ways of using Smart technologies to meets citizen’s needs, provide Return on Investment to P3 partners, and increase overall quality of life in these communities. Stafford is a rural county, poised to emerge as a leading Smart city model for the Commonwealth. Arlington is a developed, technologically advanced county ready to move to the next level of Smart city development using new technologies.
Smart solutions to be developed include new technology such as the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G connectivity, drones, intelligent transportation systems, and other community development applications. These advancements will be integrated into a unified, connected system of sensors and data to support city managers, police and fire officials, and various applications that will improve traffic, safety, health, waste management, and green programs with a reduced carbon footprint.
